In 1972, ice hockey separated from the Japan Skating Federation and joined the International Ice Hockey Federation, becoming the Japan Ice Hockey Federation.

The three Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland have long reigned as the speed skating powerhouses, but in recent years countries such as the United States, Russia, the Netherlands, Germany and Japan have been emerging as leaders. Among them, the names of those who will be remembered forever include O. Matthiesen (Norway), who won all four events at the 1912 World Championships and whose 1500m world record he set in 1914 remained unbroken for 23 years; C. Thunberg (Finland), who won a total of five gold medals at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics; I. Barangrud, who won four gold medals at the 1928 and 1936 Olympics; H. Andersen (Norway), who set a world record in the 10,000m in 1952 and won three gold medals by a large margin at the same Olympics; Y. Grishin (Soviet Union), who won the 500m and 1500m at the 1956 and 1960 Olympics; A. Schenk (Netherlands), who won the triple crown except for the 500m at the Sapporo Olympics (1972) and won four events at the World Championships two weeks later; and E. Heiden (USA), who continued to win all events at the World Championships over a three-year period from 1977 onwards and at the 1980 Olympics (five events).
