Atreus - Atreus (English spelling)

A hero in Greek mythology. Son of Pelops and Hippodameia. His nasty fight with his brother Thyestes is typical of sibling rivalry in Greek mythology, along with the story of Eteocles and Polyneices.

After killing their half-brother Chrysippus, the brothers fled to Sthenelus in Mycenae. Sthenelus, who had exiled Amphitryon, left Mycenae to the two brothers, but when their son Eurystheus also died without an heir, the two brothers began a vile fight for the throne. First, Thyestes, having an affair with Atreus' wife Aerope, stole the golden fleece that belonged to the brothers, and proposed that the kingship should go to the one who possessed the golden fleece, which Atreus agreed to. However, when Thyestes became king, Zeus sent Hermes to Atreus to make a promise to the brothers that Atreus would become king if the sun rose in the opposite direction. Then the sun rose in the west and set in the east, and Atreus became king as promised. In his pride, Atreus killed Thyestes' children and served them at Thyestes's dinner table, then banished him. Thyestes' son Aegisthus, who grew up in Atreus' palace without knowing his father, was ordered by Atreus to kill Thyestes, but he discovered who his real father was and killed Atreus instead, giving the kingship of Mycenae to his father. Atreus and Aerope also had two children, Agamemnon and Menelaus, famous for their roles in the Trojan War.

ギリシア神話の英雄。ペロプスとヒッポダメイアの子。兄弟ティエステスとの醜い争いは、エテオクレスとポリネイケスの話などと同様、ギリシア神話における兄弟争いの典型をなしている。

　兄弟は、異母弟クリシポスを殺したのちミケナイ（ミケーネ）のステネロスのもとに逃げた。アンフィトリオンを追放していたステネロスは、ミケナイを2人にゆだねたが、やがてその子エウリステウスも後継ぎを残さずに死んだため、王座をめぐる2人の卑劣な争いが始まった。まずティエステスは、アトレウスの妻アエロペと情を通じて、兄弟の所有していた金毛の仔(こ)羊を盗み出し、王権は金の羊毛をもつ者がとるべしと提案してアトレウスの合意を得た。しかし、ティエステスが王になると、ゼウスはアトレウスのもとにヘルメスを送り、太陽が逆から昇ればアトレウスが王になるとの約束を兄弟に結ばせた。すると太陽は西から昇って東に沈み、約束どおりアトレウスが王となった。おごり高ぶったアトレウスは、ティエステスの子供たちを殺害してティエステスの食膳(しょくぜん)に供したのち、彼を追放した。父親を知らずにアトレウスの館(やかた)で成人したティエステスの息子アイギストスは、アトレウスからティエステスを殺すよう命じられたとき、本当の父親がだれであるかを知って逆にアトレウスを討ち、父にミケナイの王位を与えた。なおアトレウスとアエロペの間には、トロヤ戦争で有名なアガメムノンとメネラオスが生まれている。
