… In the late 15th and 16th centuries, many Albanians fled from Ottoman Turkish rule and migrated to southern Italy and Sicily. Among these, the so-called Albares, a unique literary tradition was born that continues to this day. It reached its apex in the work of 19th-century poets such as Jeronim de Rada (1814-1903), Gavril Dara (1826-85), and Zef Serembe (1843-1901). As an increasing number of Albanians converted to Islam in Albania itself, the influence of Turkish, Persian, and Arabic literature grew in the 17th and 18th centuries, and a unique form of poetry in Albanian written in Arabic characters developed. …
