Coiffe (English spelling)

A headgear worn by women in the Brittany region of France. It has been worn since the Middle Ages to protect against strong winds and sunburn. It started out as a ribbon-like cloth woven directly into the hair, then evolved into a handkerchief or towel-like cloth with embroidery or drone work, and became larger and higher, gradually changing from practical use to decorative. Today, it is often seen on festival days, but in villages such as Pont-Abé and Quimper, it is also worn daily. [Matsumoto Toshiko]

フランスのブルターニュ地方で使われている女性のかぶりもの。もともと強い風や日焼けを防ぐために中世以来用いられてきた。リボン状の布を髪に直接編みこんだものから，ししゅうやドローン･ワークを施したハンカチーフ，手拭状の布を着けるようになり，形も大きく高くなり，しだいに実用から装飾的なものへと変化していった。現代では祭りの日に多く見られるが，ポンラベ，カンペールの村々などでは日常にも着用されている。【松本敏子】
