Josiah

A figure in the Old Testament. King of the Kingdom of Judah (reigned from about 640 to 609 BCE). Son of Amon and Ededah. He ascended to the throne at about age 8 and ruled Jerusalem for 31 years. He implemented a thorough religious reform known as the Deuteronomistic Reformation. This reform began in 622 BCE when High Priest Hilkiah discovered the Book of the Law in the temple. He read the words of the Book of the Covenant in front of the people of Judah and Jerusalem, the priests, and the prophets, and made a covenant before the Lord, swearing to walk in obedience to the Lord, to keep His commandments, testimonies, and statutes with all his heart and with all his soul, and to carry out the words of the covenant written in this book. He also abolished pagan places of worship and concentrated the Lord's places of worship in Jerusalem. He later died in Megiddo fighting against Egyptian King Necho II, who was trying to send reinforcements to Assyria to fight against the Neo-Babylonians.

旧約聖書中の人物。ユダ王国の王 (在位前 640頃～609) 。アモンとエデダの子。8歳頃即位し 31年間エルサレムを治め，申命記的改革と呼ばれる徹底した宗教改革を行なった。この改革の発端は，前 622年聖殿で大祭司ヒルキヤが律法の書を発見したことである。彼はこの契約の書の言葉をユダとエルサレムの民，祭司，預言者の前で読上げ，主の前に契約を立て，主に従って歩み，心を尽し精神を尽して主の戒めと，あかしと，定めとを守り，この書物に記されている契約の言葉を行うことを誓った。また異教の礼拝所を廃止し，主の礼拝所をエルサレムに集中した。のちに新バビロニアに対抗するため，アッシリアに援軍を送ろうとしたエジプトの王ネコ2世と戦ってメギドに死んだ。
