Kenrokuen Garden

Japanese:
Kenrokuen Garden

This famous garden of the Kaga Domain, which ruled over one million koku of rice, is located in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It is a comprehensive garden with a large strolling pond, and has the typical design of a feudal lord's garden. The area around the lotus pond was first created during the reign of Toshinaga, the second lord of the Maeda clan. This garden took the longest time to complete of any Japanese garden, taking approximately 200 years from the beginning of the Kan'ei era (1624-1644) to the Tenpo era (1830-1844). The name Kenrokuen was given by Matsudaira Sadanobu at the request of the 12th Shogun, Narinaga, and is based on a passage in the Luoyang Meienki (Records of Famous Gardens of Luoyang) by Li Gefei of the Song Dynasty, and means "a famous garden that combines the six features of grandeur, serenity, human effort, ancient beauty, springs, and views." The garden covers an area of about 100,700 square meters, and is fascinating in that it retains the design styles of each era. During the Kan'ei period, Kobori Enshu provided design guidance for Yamazakiyama, the largest artificial hill in the garden, and the surrounding area, and Kentei was in charge of construction. As a result, the designs of the Sanzon Ishigumi (stone formations) and other rock formations and streams in the area are magnificent. There are two islands, one large and one small, in the middle of the stream, and the stream is led to the large pond (Kasumigaike). There are many attractions, such as the famous Kotojidoro lantern and the hermitage teahouses such as Uchihashi-tei and Yugao-tei, making it a pleasure garden that can be enjoyed throughout the year. A special place of scenic beauty.

This is one of the seasonal winter features of the Hokuriku region. Ropes are tied around the trunks and supports of trees to suspend the branches and prevent them from breaking under the weight of snow. It usually takes about a month and a half from November 1st to set up the tree sleet, with the help of a total of about 500 workers. Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture © Hotto Ishikawa Tabi Net ">
