The Rise and Fall of the Genpei

Japanese: 源平盛衰記 - げんぺいせいすいき

A military tale from the Kamakura period. Also read as "Genpei Jo Suiki." One of the many variant versions of "The Tale of the Heike." 48 volumes. It is a compilation of several variant versions, and there are many overlaps and contradictions in the chapters and articles, which makes it seem lacking in unity. However, it is rich in content, including many articles and anecdotes related to the Genji clan. While "The Tale of the Heike" is a "narrative," this is more of a reading. Many works have taken their subject matter from articles unique to this book, and it has had a great influence on later generations.

鎌倉時代の軍記物語。「げんぺいじょうすいき」とも読む。『平家物語』の数多い異本の一つ。 48巻。いくつかの異本によって集大成したもので，編次や記事に重複や矛盾が多く，統一を欠くうらみがある。しかし源氏関係の記事，挿話などを多く含み，内容豊富。『平家物語』が「語り物」であるのに対して，これは読み物風。本書特有の記事から題材をとった作品も多く，後世への影響は大きい。
