Grassland Peichuan

Japanese: 草場佩川 - くさばはいせん

1787-1867 A Confucian scholar in the late Edo period.
Born on January 7, 1787. A retainer of the Taku clan, chief retainer of the Hizen Saga domain. Studied under Koga Seiri. In 1818, he gained fame by exchanging poetry and prose with Korean envoys in Tsushima. Later, he became a professor at the domain school, Kodokan. He excelled in Chinese poetry and ink painting on bamboo. Died on October 29, 1867, at the age of 81. His given name was Tsutomu. His nickname was Saiho. He was commonly known as Sasuke. His other pen names included Peizen and Tamameyamasho. His works include "Tsushima Nikki" and his poetry collection "Peizen Shisho."

天明7年1月7日生まれ。肥前佐賀藩家老多久(たく)氏の家臣。古賀精里にまなぶ。文化8年対馬(つしま)で朝鮮通信使と詩文をかわして名をあげる。のち藩校弘道館教授。漢詩,墨竹画をよくした。慶応3年10月29日死去。81歳。名は韡。字(あざな)は棣芳。通称は瑳(磋)助。別号に珮川,玉女山樵など。著作に「津島日記」,詩集に「珮川詩鈔」など。
