Brown algae, Chlorales, family Stonecropaceae. The algae are leathery, bifurcated several times, and cylindrical at the base. They attach to rocks in the intertidal zone where the waves are not too rough. They can reach a length of 20 cm. They often form large colonies. Along with Ishige and Selaginella nigricans, they are known as representative zonal colony-forming algae in the middle intertidal zone on the Pacific side of Honshu. They are also found on the Korean Peninsula and the coasts of China. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
