A device for remotely inputting and outputting data to and from a computer via a communication line. A data terminal device consists of various input/output sections and a terminal control section that controls communication between the computer main unit. Typical general-purpose terminal devices include typewriter terminals, display terminals, and remote batch terminals, while dedicated terminal devices include bank terminals, POS (short for point of sale) terminals, and industrial terminals. A terminal with one set of input/output devices for each communication line is called a standalone type, while a terminal with multiple sets of input/output devices is called a cluster type.

コンピューターとのデータの入出力を，通信回線を介して遠隔から行うための装置。データ端末装置は各種の入出力部と，コンピューター本体との間の通信を制御する端末制御部から構成される。代表的なものとして汎用（はんよう）端末装置ではタイプライター端末，ディスプレー端末，リモートバッチ端末などがあり，専用端末装置では銀行用端末，POS(point of saleの略)端末，工業用端末などがある。通信回線1回線に対し1組の入出力装置をもつ端末をスタンドアロン型，複数組の入出力をもつ端末をクラスター型という。
