A thin plain-woven fabric made from tussah silk, also known as pongee. The thread is spun from wild cocoons harvested in the Shandong region of China, and compared to raw silk spun from domesticated silkworm cocoons, it has the disadvantages of being less lustrous and harder to bleach, but it is often used because it requires less labor as it can be raised outdoors and has a relatively high yield. In Japan, tussah silk was originally imported from China, but now it is bred near Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, and is used only for tsumugi silk thread and weft thread for textiles. Traditionally, it was used for futon linings and heko obi belts, but nowadays, its simple style is preferred and it is used for summer clothing and kimono fabrics.
