Shinohara Nagafusa

Japanese:
Shinohara Nagafusa
Year of death: July 16, 1573 (August 13, 1573)
Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander during the Warring States period. He played the role of Magoshiro, Ukyo no Shin, and became a Buddhist monk under the name Shuunsai Joboku. His ancestors are said to have been local lords from Shinohara-go, Yasu County, Omi Province (Yasu Town, Shiga Prefecture), and were vassals of a certain Taga, but then defected to Awa and served the Miyoshi clan. Nagafusa served Miyoshi Yoshikata as the lord of Kamisakura Castle, Awa Asue County (Kawajima Town, Tokushima Prefecture), and in September 1558 (Eiroku 1), he marched to Kinai with Miyoshi Nagayoshi and Yoshikata, and posted a prohibition at Saga Seiryoji Temple. In March 1559, after Yoshikata was killed in the Battle of Izumi Kumeda, he returned to Japan and became a Buddhist monk. After Nagayoshi's death, when the Three Brothers came into conflict with Matsunaga Hisahide, he played an active role as a powerful military commander on the side of the Three Brothers, and in June of the same year, he landed in Hyogo with Ashikaga Yoshihide, and in July he took Settsu Koshimizu Castle, which was on Matsunaga's side, and the following month he took Nakajima Castle in the same prefecture. Yoshihide's appointment as Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate was largely due to Nagafusa's efforts. He showed sympathy for Christians and arranged for Frois to enter Kyoto. He resisted Oda Nobunaga, who entered Kyoto, but a peace treaty was made in November of the first year of the Genki era (1570). After Yoshikata's death, he served Miyoshi Nagaharu, and established the 22 articles of the provincial law, the Shinkansei Shiki. He was later attacked by Nagaharu and Togawa Nobuyasu, with whom he had become feudal, and was killed in battle at Kamizakura Castle. <References> Wakamatsu Wasaburo, Shinohara Nagafusa, and his "Study of the Shinkansei Shiki" (Furusato Awa, issues 96-106)
