A British fashion brand. Founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry in a town in the south of England, Burberry later moved its headquarters to London. It is famous for its trench coats, which feature a dense twill weave called gabardine. Its trademark is the tartan check pattern of black, white, and red lines intersecting on the camel lining. Burberry is famous for its trench coats, which were originally military outerwear designed with an emphasis on waterproofing and weather resistance to suit fighting in muddy trenches, as the name suggests. They were adopted by the British Army in World War I, and their practicality and functionality drew attention, leading to their popularity among civilians. Unlike the tailor-made clothing that had been the mainstream in British men's clothing up until that point, trench coats were ready-made garments suited to mass production, and thanks to the British textile industry, which had matured during the Industrial Revolution, they became widely popular among the middle class and other general public. Burberry later expanded its product line to include women's clothing, fashion accessories, and products for young people, in addition to the trench coats that became popular among the general public. Along with Aquascutum, which was established around the same time, and DAKS, which came later, Burberry has become a representative British brand with a Royal Warrant (supplier to the British Royal Family). It also gained fame as a favorite of polar explorers such as Amundsen and Scott, as well as famous mountaineers and aviators. Burberry has been imported to Japan since the First World War, and has been well known since early times. Its widespread popularity in Japan began in 1965 when Sanyo Shokai began importing and selling the brand and began licensed production of various products. As a result, many relatively inexpensive "original Japanese" products made by Sanyo Shokai were produced, all of which bear the Burberry name. The two companies had a relationship for half a century, but the contract was terminated in 2015. The UK headquarters is currently promoting a luxury line as a global strategy, and is shifting to direct sales in each country. It is believed that the aim is to raise the brand value and gain an advantage in the market by unifying the products into high-end products planned by the headquarters. It is not rare for European brands to penetrate the market using the distribution network of a Japanese agency as a foothold, and then switch to a direct sales method that focuses on selling their own products to expand sales. It is thought that Burberry followed the methods used by Mercedes-Benz, the car manufacturer, and Godiva, the chocolate manufacturer. Although Sanyo Shokai has many other brands, this brand has accounted for a large proportion of its business, and attention is focused on how it will develop in department store sales areas and other areas.
