It means "conspicuous consumption" and can also be translated as "ostentatious consumption." The simplest example is ostentatious consumption. For example, the phenomenon of consuming extremely expensive goods to gain social prestige. It is also called the "Veblen effect" after T. Veblen's discussion of this type of consumption in "The Theory of the Leisure Class" (1899).
