Preference for gold

This refers to the tendency to prefer gold over other financial assets as a form of personal savings or a country's foreign exchange reserves. This is because gold has long been the most trusted store of value. As the dollar crisis occurred in the late 1950s, European countries' preference for gold grew and they began to demand the exchange of dollar claims for gold, which led to a large outflow of gold from the United States, forcing the United States to suspend gold exchange on August 15, 1971.
