Genji incense

Japanese: 源氏香 - げんじこう

〘Noun〙 One of the kumi-ko in the art of incense. Five different incense packets are prepared, and the incense master randomly selects five packets from the 25 and burns them. The members listen to the incense and distinguish them, and express the differences with a five-line diagram of Genji incense that corresponds to the five packets. One of the ten kumi-ko in the Shino school and one of the ten kumi-ko in the Chugoku school of the Oie school. *Gohokoin-ki - February 7, 1501 (Meiō 10) "There was a Genji incense contest the day before yesterday at Choshi."

〘名〙香道の組香の一つ。五種の香を五包ずつ作り、香元がそれら二五包から任意に五包とって炷(た)き、連衆が聞き分けて、その異同を五包の香に対応した五本線の源氏香の図で表わす。志野流内十組香、御家流中古十組香の一つ。※後法興院記‐明応一〇年（1501）二月七日「有一昨日之源氏香之勝負銚子事也」
