Giant pangolin

It is an animal of the order Squamata, family Pangolinidae, class Mammalia. It has a body length of 75-100cm, a tail length of 50-70cm, a weight of 30-35kg, and 17 rows of scales on its body. It is found in Senegal and other parts of West Africa, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), and Uganda, and lives in forests and savannas, but does not climb trees and spends its time on the ground at night. It sometimes walks on only its hind legs. It sleeps during the day on an aardvark or in a hole it has dug itself, and at night it catches termites and ants with its long tongue. It usually gives birth to only one baby, and the parents carry the baby on their backs.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱有鱗(ゆうりん)目センザンコウ科の動物。体長75～100センチメートル、尾長50～70センチメートル、体重30～35キログラム、胴の鱗(うろこ)は17列ある。セネガルほかの西アフリカ、ガボン、コンゴ民主共和国（旧ザイール）、ウガンダに分布し、森林やサバンナにすむが、木に登ることはなく、夜間地上で生活する。ときに後足のみで歩くこともある。日中は、ツチブタまたは自らが掘った穴の中で眠り、夜間、シロアリやアリなどを長い舌でとらえる。普通1産1子で、親は子を自分の背にのせて運ぶ。
