Estienne, C. (English spelling) EstienneC

...Berengario da Carpi (?-1530?) then wrote the first illustrated anatomical book, Isagogae breves (1523), and criticized Mondino. In France, Charles Estienne (1503-64) began preparing to publish anatomical illustrations around 1530 (the actual publication was in 1545). It was against this historical background that A. Vesalius, the father of modern anatomy, appeared.

From [Anatomy]

...In the 16th and 17th centuries, there was a tendency to depict anatomical specimens together with the landscape and surroundings, turning them into works of art. For example, the French Charles Estienne's (1503-64) "Human Anatomy" (1545) and especially the Dutch Frederick Ruysch's (1638-1731) "Anatomia vitae" (4 volumes) (1701-04) combine precise realistic depictions to create a fantastical or caricatured effect. In addition, Arcimboldo's composite figures made of foreign objects suggest the use of helmets decorated with animals and masks, but they may also be influenced by dissected anatomical diagrams, in which muscles, tendons, and internal organs are piled up as objects. It is also easy to infer that the robotic figures of Giovanni Battista Bracelli (late 16th century - early 17th century) reflect the nervous system and arterial and venous systems of humans. …
