...Population: 272,000 (1990). Located about 60 km south of Jakarta, it was called Buitenzorg (meaning "Peaceful Land") during the Dutch colonial period. It is located at an altitude of 250 m in the valley between the volcanoes Salak (2,211 m above sea level) and Gede (2,958 m above sea level).
