A general strike by dock workers broke out in Wonsan, South Hamgyong Province, Korea in 1929. In September 1928, workers at the Munpyeong oil depot of the British Rising Sun Oil Company went on strike after a Japanese supervisor beat a worker, demanding the supervisor's dismissal and the establishment of a minimum wage system. The strike was temporarily called off when the company promised to resolve the issue within three months. However, the company failed to keep its promise, and a full-scale general strike began in January of the following year. The Wonsan Labor Federation supported the strike, and it spread widely and became protracted. The Government-General's Office responded with a hardline stance, suppressing the strike by arresting strike leaders, and the strike was finally called off in April.
