[Born] Gojong 28 (1891).10.21. Buan, Jeollabuk-do [Died] February 18, 1955. Korean educator and politician from Busan. His pen name was Inchon. He returned to Korea after graduating from the School of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University in 1914. In 1915 he became the head of Central School. In 1919 he established the Keijo Spinning Company. In 1920 he launched the private Korean-language newspaper Dong-A Ilbo. After traveling to Europe and America from 1929 to 1931, he became the head of Bosung Technical School (now Korea University) in 1932. As a member of the ethnic bourgeoisie, he led colonial Korean nationalism in education, industry, and speech. After liberation in 1945, he was appointed chairman of the advisory council to the US military government and in 1946 he played an active role in establishing the government as chief general secretary (party leader) of the Democratic Party of Korea. He was elected the second vice president in 1951, but declined in 1952 in opposition to the dictatorship of Yi Seung-man. While leading the opposition party, he died of illness in Busan, where he had taken refuge, on February 18, 1955 during the Korean War.
