Kanazaki Castle

Japanese:
Kanazaki Castle
A medieval castle located northeast of Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture. It was also written as Kanegasaki Castle and called Tsuruga Castle. It was a sturdy fortress located on a mountain on a cape jutting out into the Sea of Japan. The time of construction and the builder are unknown, but in 1181, Taira no Michimori, who went down to Echizen to defeat Kiso Yoshinaka, fought against Yoshinaka's forces from Tsuruga Castle. Later, in 1336, during the Nanboku-cho civil war, Nitta Yoshisada, who was pursued by Ashikaga Takauji, entered this castle with the parents, Tsuneyoshi and Takayoshi, and used it as a base. This was because Tsuruga was home to Kehi Shrine, which had been highly revered by the imperial court since ancient times, and the shrine officials were active on the side of Emperor Go-Daigo. In response, Ashikaga Takauji ordered Echizen Shugo Shiba Takatsune and others to attack the castle, and the battle continued until March of the following year. The castle finally fell on March 6th after Yoshisada escaped, and Prince Takayoshi committed suicide. Over ten members of the Nitta clan, Shonagon Ichijo Yukifusa and others committed suicide, and Prince Tsuneyoshi escaped but was captured by Takauji's army (Taiheiki). In 1351, Ashikaga Tadayoshi, who was in conflict with Takauji, based himself in the castle. During the Sengoku period, it became a frontline base for the Asakura clan, which ruled Echizen, but was abandoned after the Asakura clan was destroyed in 1573. → Somayama Castle
