...14 operettas written between 1871 and 1896, with librettos and lyrics by British playwright WS Gilbert and music by British composer AS Sullivan. The theatre built by Richard D'Oyly Carte with the profits from Sullivan's early works was called the Savoy Theatre in 1881, and this became the main venue for the performances thereafter, hence the name "Savoy Opera". However, since there are many lines without music, strictly speaking they should be called operettas. ...
