This is an old town in Kitauwa District, occupying the upper reaches of the Shimanto River in southern Ehime Prefecture. The main settlement, Chikanaga, is in the center of the Kihoku Basin and lies along the Yodo Line. Rice, vegetable cultivation, pig and chicken farming are thriving, and the town also produces chestnuts and has an alcohol factory. In January 2005, it merged with Hiyoshi Village in Kitauwa District to become a town, called Kihoku Town. Area: 152.98 km2 . Population: 11,116 (2003). 愛媛県南部,四万十(しまんと)川上流を占める北宇和郡の旧町。主集落の近永は鬼北(きほく)盆地の中心で,予土線に沿う。米作,野菜栽培,養豚・養鶏が盛んで,クリも産しアルコール工場もある。2005年1月北宇和郡日吉村と合併し町制,鬼北町となる。152.98km2。1万1116人(2003)。
