Born: April 23, 1420, Podiebrat [Died] March 22, 1471. King of Bohemia in Prague (reigned 1458-71). Also known as Podăbrady. Born into a noble Hussite family. In 1444 he became the leader of the conservative Utraquists, and in 1448 occupied Prague in opposition to the pro-Habsburg Catholics. In 1451 he was appointed regent for the young king Ladislav I (László V of Hungary) by the Council of Tribes, and was elected king after his death. With the support of the small and medium-sized nobles and cities, he curbed the tyranny of the great feudal lords and organized the country well. As a result, Bohemia prospered greatly under his rule. He persecuted the radical Hussites who had gathered in the Bohemian Brotherhood, placing priority on cooperation with Catholics in the country, but in 1462 he came into conflict with Pope Pius II, and was excommunicated by Pope Paul II in 1466. In 1469, his country was invaded by Hungarian King Matthias I Corvinus, who had been asked by the Pope, and he died in despair after facing rebellions by the country's great feudal lords.
