Koto [town] - Koto

Japanese: 湖東[町] - ことう

A former town in Aichi County, in the central-eastern part of Shiga Prefecture. Most of it is located on the right bank of the Aichi River, which is part of the Koto Plain. Temple bell casting has been carried out here since ancient times, and the yarn twisting industry is also thriving. It is a producer of Omi rice, and livestock farming and greenhouse horticulture are also carried out here. There is a Japanese maple tree (a natural monument). In February 2005, it merged with Yokaichi City, Egenji Town and Gokasho Town in Kanzaki County, and Aito Town in Aichi County to become a city, Higashiomi City. 26.53 ^km2 . 9,116 people (2003).

滋賀県中東部，愛知(えち)郡の旧町。大部分は湖東平野に属する愛知川右岸に位置する。古くから梵鐘(ぼんしょう)鋳造を行い，撚糸工業も盛ん。近江米の産地であり，畜産，施設園芸も行う。ハナノキ（天然記念物）がある。2005年２月八日市市，神崎郡永源寺町，五個荘町，愛知郡愛東町と合併し市制，東近江市となる。26.53km²。9116人（2003）。
