Flowering plants - Flowering plants

A general term for plants that bear flowers and produce seeds. The French botanist AT Brongniart (1801-76) grouped angiosperms and gymnosperms together, and distinguished them from cryptogams such as ferns. However, the sporangia of ferns such as Club moss can be viewed as flowers organologically, so when grouping angiosperms and gymnosperms together in systematic classification, it is appropriate to use the term seed plants, based on the formation of seeds, rather than the presence or absence of flowers.

花をつけ、種子を生じる植物の総称。フランスの植物学者ブロニャールA. T. Brongniart（1801―76）が被子植物と裸子植物を一つにまとめ、シダ植物などの隠花植物と区別した。しかし、シダ植物のヒカゲノカズラなどの胞子嚢穂(ほうしのうすい)を器官学的には花とみることもできるので、系統分類学上、被子植物と裸子植物をまとめるときは、花の有無でなく、種子の形成を基準に種子植物という語を用いるのが適当である。
