Edo Famous Places Record

Japanese: 江戸名所記 - えどめいしょき

The oldest illustrated guidebook to famous places in Edo. It is said to have been written by Azai Ryoi, and was published in 1662 (Kanbun 2) by Kono Michikiyo, Gojojicho, Kyoto. It has 7 volumes. It starts with the history of Musashi Province, and describes 80 famous places in Edo, such as Edo Castle and Nihonbashi, in the form of sightseeing, mainly focusing on shrines and temples. Volume 4 describes Negicho Joruri and Kabuki, and Volume 7 describes Shin Yoshiwara, but the castle tower of Edo Castle still remains, and there are also descriptions of Kichijoji and Ekoin after the Meireki fire (1657), so it cannot be said that everything is written at the same time. The illustrations are also valuable as early Edo historical materials. Included in Zokuzoku Gunsho Ruiju, Edo Sosho, and Kaizo Bunko.

江戸最古の絵入り名所案内的地誌。著者は浅井了意(りょうい)と伝えられ、1662年（寛文2）京都五条寺町・河野道清刊。7巻。武蔵(むさし)国の沿革から始め、江戸城、日本橋などの江戸の名所80か所を、主として神社・仏閣を中心に見物する形式で記す。巻4には禰宜(ねぎ)町浄瑠璃(じょうるり)や歌舞伎(かぶき)、巻7には新吉原の記述もあるが、江戸城にはまだ天守閣が残り、また一方で吉祥寺(きちじょうじ)や回向院(えこういん)など明暦(めいれき)大火（1657）以後のこともみえるので、すべてが同時点の叙述とはいえない。挿画は初期の江戸史料としても貴重である。『続々群書類従』『江戸叢書(そうしょ)』『改造文庫』所収。
