A perennial plant of the lily family, widely distributed in the temperate zone of East Asia, in Japan it grows wild in sunny grasslands from the Kanto region westward. It has an ovoid bulb about 2 cm long underground. In early spring, it produces two opposing basal leaves, and in March or April, it produces a flower stalk in the center with one or two white flowers at the tip. The bulb is edible, and in Chinese medicine it is used as a tonic, called sanjiko. ユリ科の多年草で東アジアの温帯に広く分布し,日本では関東地方より西の日当りのよい草地に自生する。地下に卵球形で長さ 2cmほどの鱗茎がある。早春,2枚の向き合った根生葉を出し,3~4月頃,中央に花茎を出して先端に1~2個の白い花をつける。鱗茎は食用にされ,また漢方では山慈姑 (さんじこ) といって強壮剤にする。
