A former town in Masuda County, eastern Gifu Prefecture. Hot springs (simple springs, 33-68°C) bubble up in the riverbed of the Hida River, which flows south through the center of the prefecture, and the town developed rapidly after the opening of the Takayama Main Line, becoming one of the leading hot spring towns in the Tokai region. It belongs to the Hida Kisogawa Quasi-National Park and is home to Nakayama Shichiri. In March 2004, it merged with Hagiwara Town, Kosaka Town, Kanayama Town, and Maze Village in Masuda County to form Gero City. 194.11 km2 . Population: 14,565 (2003).

岐阜県東部,益田(ました)郡の旧町。中部を南流する飛騨川の河床に温泉(単純泉,33〜68℃)がわき,高山本線開通後急速に発展,東海地方の代表的な温泉町になっている。飛騨木曾川国定公園に属し,中山七里(なかやましちり)がある。2004年3月益田郡萩原町,小坂町,金山町,馬瀬村と合併し,下呂市となる。194.11km2。1万4565人(2003)。
