It is a member of the Felidae family of the Carnivora order of the Mammalia class. It inhabits wastelands, dry grasslands, and scrub forests from central India through Iran, Iraq, and Arabia to sub-Saharan Africa. Its body length is 55-75 cm, its tail length 22-33 cm, and it weighs about 8 kg. Its body is light yellow to reddish brown, and it has long hair on the tips of its ears. It lives alone and mainly hunts in the morning and evening. It mostly preys on mice, rabbits, and spring hares, but also attacks small antelopes. It has a strong jumping ability, jumping up to 1.8 meters into the air and catching low-flying birds. It is said to be able to survive for long periods without water and replenish its fluids from its prey. It nests in rock crevices or in holes in the ground abandoned by other animals, and gives birth to 1-4 young at a time, mainly from September to December. The gestation period is 70-78 days. The young are born with their eyes partially open, are weaned at 10 weeks, and reach sexual maturity at 21 months. They are easily tamed by humans, and were once kept and trained in India and Asia Minor to catch antelopes, rabbits, and birds.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目ネコ科の動物。インド中央部からイラン、イラク、アラビアを経てサハラ砂漠以南のアフリカまでの荒れ地、乾いた草原、低木林に生息する。体長55～75センチメートル、尾長22～33センチメートル、体重8キログラムほどである。体は淡黄色から赤褐色で、耳の先に長毛がある。単独で生活し、おもに朝夕に狩りをする。ネズミ、ウサギ、トビウサギを捕食することが多いが、小形のアンテロープ（レイヨウ）も襲う。またジャンプ力が強く、空中に1.8メートルも跳び上がり、低く飛ぶ鳥をとらえることもする。長期間水なしで生存でき、獲物から水分を補給するといわれる。岩の割れ目や他の動物が捨てた地中の穴を巣とし、9～12月を中心に1産1～4子を産む。妊娠期間は70～78日である。子は産まれたときから不完全ながら目が開いており、10週間で乳離れし、21か月で性成熟する。人になれやすく、かつてインドや小アジアではレイヨウやウサギ、鳥などをとらえるために飼育して訓練された。
