śarīra (English spelling) sarira

...The term "Butshariyari" is used to refer to the remains of the Buddha. It is a transliteration of the Sanskrit śarīra. In ancient India, there was a belief that one could be reborn in heaven by making a memorial for the remains of a great saint. The remains of the Buddha were divided into eight parts by powerful tribes and kings at the time, and stūpas (towers) were built in each place to enshrine them, according to an old Buddhist biography.
