When an airplane or glider descends at a gentle angle without engine thrust. The angle between the flight path and the ground is called the glide angle, the ratio of the distance traveled to the altitude reached during that time is called the glide ratio, and the loss of altitude per unit time is called the sink rate (or descent rate). The better the performance of the glider, the higher the glide ratio, exceeding 40:1 for a high-performance soarer. In other words, if it starts gliding from an altitude of 1000m, it can fly as far as 40km, and if there is an updraft during that time, it can regain altitude and continue flying.
