Charadriiformes, Charadriidae. Total length 34-37cm. The head and neck are grey with a black horizontal stripe on the lower chest. The back, shoulder feathers and parts of the upper coverts are grey-brown. The primary flight feathers and primary coverts are black, and the rest of the upper wing is white. The tail is white with a black horizontal stripe at the tip. The belly to lower coverts are also white. These feather patterns are not very noticeable when on the ground, but when flying, not only do the tips of the wings appear as large black triangles, but the contrast between white, black and brown is clear and beautiful. The bill is black at the tip and yellow elsewhere. The skin around the eyes is also yellow, and there is a small yellow fleshy spot near the base of the upper bill. The legs are somewhat long and yellow with a pale greenish tinge. They breed in northeastern China and Japan, and most of them migrate to southern China and Southeast Asia to spend the winter. In Japan, the breeding grounds are in the northern and central parts of Honshu, and some birds spend the winter in the southern and southern parts of the island. They build their nests in early spring on the ground in relatively large fields, riverside grasslands, and after-harvest paddy fields. When agricultural work begins, their nests are often destroyed.

チドリ目チドリ科。全長 34～37cm。頭部から頸部は灰色で下胸部に黒い横帯がある。背，肩羽，上雨覆の一部は灰褐色。初列風切と初列雨覆は黒く，翼上面のほかの部分は白い。尾は白く，先端部に黒色横帯がある。腹から下雨覆も白い。地上にいるときにはこれらの羽色のパターンはあまり目立たないが，飛ぶと翼の先端部が大きな黒い三角形に見えるだけでなく，白，黒，褐色のコントラストがはっきりして美しくみごとである。嘴は先が黒く，ほかの部分は黄色。眼のまわりの皮膚も黄色で，上嘴基部近くに小さな黄色い肉質の斑がある。脚はやや長く，淡い緑色を帯びた黄色。中国北東部と日本に繁殖分布し，ほとんどは中国南部や東南アジアに渡って越冬する。日本の繁殖地は本州の北部と中部で，南部以南には越冬する鳥もいる。早春に比較的広い畑地，河原の草地，水田の刈り跡などの地上に営巣する。農作業が始まると巣が壊されてしまうことも少なくない。
