Tetralin - Tetralin (English spelling)

An alicyclic compound. Also known as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene. In tetralin, one benzene ring of naphthalene is hydrogenated and saturated, but the other remains as a benzene ring, so it has both aliphatic (alicyclic) and aromatic properties. It is found in coal tar oil. It can also be obtained by hydrogenating naphthalene using a nickel catalyst. In this case, decalin is obtained under strong conditions (pressure and heat). It can also be produced by the Clemmensen reduction of α-tetralone with zinc amalgam and hydrochloric acid. It is a colorless liquid that is insoluble in water and soluble in common organic solvents. When oxidized, it gives phthalic anhydride, and when dehydrogenated, it gives naphthalene. It is mainly used as a solvent for oils, fats, resins, waxes, etc., and is also used as a cleaning agent.

脂環式化合物の一つ。1,2,3,4-テトラヒドロナフタレンともいう。テトラリンではナフタレンの一方のベンゼン環が水素化されて飽和しているが、他方はベンゼン環のままで残っているので、脂肪族（脂環式化合物）と芳香族の両方の性質をもっている。石炭タール油中に含まれる。ナフタレンをニッケル触媒を用いて水素化しても得られる。この際強い条件（加圧・加熱）を用いるとデカリンを与える。またα(アルファ)-テトラロンの亜鉛アマルガムと塩酸によるクレメンゼン還元でも生成する。水に溶けず、一般の有機溶媒に溶ける無色液体。酸化すると無水フタル酸を与え、脱水素によってナフタレンを生成する。おもに油脂、脂肪、樹脂、ろうなどの溶剤となるほか、洗浄剤にも使われる。
