Herodianus

Roman historian. He wrote eight volumes of Roman history in Greek, covering the period from the death of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (180) to the accession of Gordian III (238). Nothing is known about his life, except that he was a minor official in Rome in the early 3rd century, and there are many different theories about it. It is generally believed that he was a Syrian-born slave freed by the emperor. His works are valuable as information from a contemporary, but they are didactic, rhetorical, and superficial. ローマの歴史家。マルクス･アウレリウス帝の死(180)からゴルディアヌス3世の登位(238)に至るローマ史8巻をギリシア語で書いた。彼の生涯に関しては，3世紀初めにローマで下級役人をしていたこと以外はまったく不明で，諸説がある。一般に言われているところによれば，シリア出身で皇帝の解放奴隷であった。彼の作品は同時代人による情報として貴重ではあるが，教訓的，修辞的，表面的である。【市川雅俊】
