Katakami

Japanese:
Katakami

This is the central district of Bizen City in the southeastern part of Okayama Prefecture. Formerly Katakami-cho, it is where the city hall is located. The port at the back of Katakami Bay is recorded as Katakaminotsu in the Engishiki, and in the Muromachi period, the Sanyo Road passed through it, making it a key location for land and sea transport. In the early modern period, Nishikatakami was the location of the head inn, wholesaler, and Okayama Domain storehouse. The town fell into some decline when the JR Sanyo Main Line was diverted, but it grew as a fireproof brick manufacturing town and a town for its shipment. It was the starting point of the Katakami Railway (closed in June 1991). The JR Ako Line, National Route 2, and National Route 250 pass through the area.
