A state in the southwest of India. Also known as the Malabar region. Area 39,000 km2. Population 29.1 million, population density 749/km2 (1991) is the second largest after West Bengal. The state capital is Trivandrum. From west to east, the topography is (1) coastal sand dunes, (2) lagoons and back marshes, (3) alluvial plains, (4) low lateritized hills, and (5) the steep western slopes of the Western Ghats.
