A city in north-central Nigeria. It is located 160 km north of Abuja, on the Kaduna River, in the savanna at an altitude of 650 m. It was founded in 1913 by the British Governor L. Lagard as the capital of the British Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, and in 1917 the capital of North Central Province was moved from Zungeru. It was the capital of northern Nigeria from 1954 to 1967. It has a large cotton spinning industry, as well as factories for brewing, soft drinks, furniture, and automobile assembly. It is the intersection of two railway lines heading north from Lagos and Port Harcourt, and is a distribution center for cotton, groundnuts, leather, guinea corn, millet, and cola nuts. It has a domestic airport. Population: 301,900 (1991 estimate).

ナイジェリア中北部の都市。アブジャの北 160km，カドゥナ河畔，標高 650mのサバナ地帯に位置。 1913年イギリスの総督 L.ラガードにより，イギリス保護領北部ナイジェリアの首都として建設され，17年にノースセントラル州の州都がズンゲルから遷都。 54～67年北部ナイジェリアの首都。大規模な綿紡工業があり，ほかに醸造，清涼飲料，家具，自動車組立てなどの工場がある。ラゴス，ポートハーコートから北上する2本の鉄道の交点で，綿花，ナンキンマメ，皮革，ギニアコーン，ミレット，コーラナッツなどの集散地。国内空港がある。人口 30万 1900 (1991推計) 。
