A city in north-central Nigeria. It is located 160 km north of Abuja, on the Kaduna River, in the savanna at an altitude of 650 m. It was founded in 1913 by the British Governor L. Lagard as the capital of the British Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, and in 1917 the capital of North Central Province was moved from Zungeru. It was the capital of northern Nigeria from 1954 to 1967. It has a large cotton spinning industry, as well as factories for brewing, soft drinks, furniture, and automobile assembly. It is the intersection of two railway lines heading north from Lagos and Port Harcourt, and is a distribution center for cotton, groundnuts, leather, guinea corn, millet, and cola nuts.
