…The English Reformation followed a different path from the German and Swiss Reformations, but theologically it established its doctrinal position while being strongly influenced by continental reformers such as Luther, Zwingli, Butzer, and Calvin. In the Elizabethan era, when the Church of England was established, continental theologians, especially Calvin's ecclesiology and clerical theory, were dominant, but at the end of the 16th century, Richard Bancroft and Hooker positioned the Church of England as a branch of the universal (Catholic) Church and advocated the need for a bishopric based on apostolic succession. In the 17th century, Lancelot Andrewes and Lord William Laud emphasized the Catholic nature of the church to the Puritans, and Laud was executed during the Puritan Revolution, so the High Church gained the initiative at the time of the Restoration. …

…イギリス宗教改革はドイツやスイスの宗教改革とは違った歩みをたどったが，神学的には初めルター，ついでツウィングリ，ブツァー，カルバンら大陸の宗教改革者の影響を強く受けつつその教義的立場を確立した。国教会として確立するエリザベス朝では，大陸の神学者，とくにカルバンの教会論，職制論が支配的であったが，16世紀末にはバンクロフトRichard Bancroft，フッカーらが英国国教会を普遍的(カトリック)教会の一つの枝として位置づけ，使徒継承に基づく主教制の必要を唱えた。17世紀に入るとアンドルーズLancelot Andrewes，ロードWilliam Laudらがピューリタンに対して教会のカトリック性を強調し，ロードがピューリタン革命で処刑されたこともあって，王政復古時には高教会派が主導権を得た。…
