A perennial vine of the Cucurbitaceae family that grows in forests in the mountains and fields. It is called Gynostemma because its leaves have a sweet taste when chewed. There are male and female plants, and a somewhat thick underground stem lies underground. The stem is creeping and grows long, and wraps around other things with tendrils. The leaves have long petioles and grow alternately, with five leaflets. The flowers are small, pale green, about 5 mm in diameter, and grow in inflorescences from the base of the leaves around August to September. The corolla is deeply divided into five lobes, and the lobes have sharp tips. Male flowers have five stamens, and female flowers have one pistil.
