...Darul Islamist forces waged guerilla warfare against the Republican Army in various parts of Western Java, and also drew up their own constitution, calling on Islamic forces outside Java to join the rebellion. Kartoswiriyo was arrested and executed in June 1962, and security in West Java was finally restored, but rebellions to establish an Islamic state continued in southern Sulawesi and Aceh, led by former Republican Army officer Kahar Muzakar, and the rebel forces in southern Sulawesi were finally suppressed in 1965. As can be seen from the declaration of the Sulawesi rebel army ("Crush the new Majapahit imperialism!"), at the root of these rebellions was not only a strong Islamic faith, but also resentment and hatred by the Javanese against Republican rule.
