[raw]? [Died] 4/942. General of the Abbasid Caliphate of Mosul. The first Amir al-Umar. He was of Turkish Khazar origin. His father was a low-ranking Mamluk (a Turkish slave soldier), but he rose to prominence with the help of General Munis, and after serving as police chief and chamberlain, he became governor of Lower Iraq and built up his military strength. In 936, in order to put an end to the power struggles within the court, Caliph Rādī appointed him as Amir al-Umar, who had the military strength, and gave him full military and administrative powers of the empire. In 938, he was driven out of his position by his subordinate Bajqam, but was reappointed in 941. The following year, he was defeated by the army of Governor Ahwaz and fled to Mosul, but was assassinated by Nasir ud-Daullah al-Hasan of the Hamdanid Caliphate.
