An old town in Tagata County, Shizuoka Prefecture, occupying the northwest foot of Mt. Amagi in the center of the Izu Peninsula. Known as a hot spring resort, with hot springs at the center of Yugashima (simple springs, 50°C), as well as Yoshina, Funabara, Sagasawa, Tsukigase, and others. Wasabi and shiitake mushrooms are local specialties. Part of the town belongs to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and it is home to Joren Falls and Haccho Pond, making it an ideal place for hiking in the Amagi Mountains. In April 2004, it merged with Shuzenji Town, Toi Town, and Nakaizu Town in Tagata County to form Izu City. Area: 135.14 km2 . Population: 7,696 (2003). 静岡県田方(たがた)郡,伊豆半島中央部の天城山北西麓を占める旧町。温泉郷として知られ,中心をなす湯ヶ島(単純泉など,50℃)のほか吉奈,船原(ふなばら),嵯峨沢,月ヶ瀬などの温泉がわく。ワサビ,シイタケを特産。一部は富士箱根伊豆国立公園に属し,浄蓮滝,八丁池があり,天城山群ハイキングに好適。2004年4月田方郡修善寺町,土肥町,中伊豆町と合併し,伊豆市となる。135.14km2。7696人(2003)。
