Abbreviated as "staple fiber." Continuous long fibers (filaments) cut to an appropriate length with a cutter to be used as raw material for spinning and other processes. Originally it meant cut rayon, but now it is widely used to refer to cut short fibers of various man-made fibers. The length and thickness of the fibers vary depending on the purpose. Many are short fibers that have been given a curl (crimp) to make them easier to spin (spinnability), to increase the intertwining of the fibers (cohesion), and to increase bulk.
