Shichiri-to - Shichiri no Watashi

Japanese:
Shichiri-to - Shichiri no Watashi
The only sea route on the Tokaido that ran between Godo Beach in Miya-juku, Aichi-gun, Owari Province (present-day Atsuta Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture) and Ise-Kuwana-juku. It is also called Miya-watari, Atsuta-watari, and Maen-watari. When Tokugawa Ieyasu established the route of the Tokaido in 1601, he avoided the land route that would have gone around the coast of Ise Bay, where the Kiso River flows, and instead decided that the Shichiri-watari sea route through Ise Bay was the official route. It is said that the ferry began in 1616. Under the control of the Atsuta Boat Station, dozens of boats were always available. The journey took about four hours, and the route was seven ri along the land at high tide and nine to ten ri around the coast at low tide. In 1625, a nightlight was installed on Godo Beach, but nighttime navigation was prohibited from 1651 onwards. From the mid-modern period onwards, the Jyuri-watashi crossing, which crossed directly to Yokkaichi in Ise, was also used. →Sayaji → Related items Atsuta [ward]
