In 1973, a center-left coalition government led by Johannes M. den Uyl (1919-) was formed. During the oil crisis in the autumn, the Netherlands, along with the United States, was subject to an oil embargo by Arab oil-producing countries, but fortunately, domestic production and consumption of natural gas increased dramatically, allowing the country to overcome the crisis.
