…the former is called the menstrual corpus luteum, and the latter the corpus luteum of pregnancy. When the corpus luteum degenerates and atrophies, it becomes scar tissue called corpus albicans, and within six weeks it becomes visible only under a microscope. The corpus luteum that continues to function even when not pregnant is called the permanent corpus luteum, and is found in livestock such as dairy cows.
