It was the most expensive serial to make, costing $350,000, about three times the cost of a typical serial, and spawned two sequels in 1938 and 1940. With the Second World War, films with anti-Japanese imagery such as "Drums of Fumanchu" (1940) and the anti-Nazi "Jungle Queen" (1941) were made, and after the war films such as "Superman" (1948) and "Batman and Robin" (1950) were made, but the quality gradually declined and the films continued to get worse and worse. By the mid-1950s they had fallen out of fashion and were used to fill gaps in programming, and the genre eventually moved to television, with Columbia's "Blazing the Overland Trail" (1956) being the last true action series. …もっとも人気を集めたトーキー連続活劇は，バスター･クラブBuster Crabbe(1907‐83)扮するフラッシュ･ゴードンを主人公とした宇宙冒険ファンタジー《超人対火星人Flash Gordon》(1936)で，ふつうの連続活劇の約3倍にあたる35万ドルというもっとも費用をかけた作品であり，その後も38年と40年に2本の続編がつくられた。第2次世界大戦とともに，イメージの上で反日的な性格を持った《フーマンチューの太鼓Drums of Fumanchu》(1940)とか反ナチ的な《密林の女王Jungle Queen》(1941)などがつくられ，戦後は《スーパーマンSuperman》(1948)や《バットマンBatman and Robin》(1950)などがつくられたが，しだいに質が低下して粗悪化の一途をたどり，50年代半ばにはすたれて番組の穴埋めに使われるようになり，やがてこのジャンルはテレビに移行，本来の連続活劇はコロムビアの《ブレージング･ゼ･オーバーランド･トレイルBlazing the Overland Trail》(1956)が最後のものになった。アクション映画【柏倉 昌美】。…
