…The word “cold” (kaze) is pronounced the same as “kaze” (wind), and other infectious diseases caused by viruses are sometimes called “kaze” (wind). When an epidemic occurs, straw dolls are made and burned as part of a ceremony to “send off the wind god” and ward off the disaster.
